1. Large-Scale Tree Planting & Reforestation

These programs focus on restoring natural vegetation and combating desertification, particularly in the northern regions.

  • Kaduna’s 10 Million Trees Project: Kaduna State launched a major afforestation program to plant 10 million trees over four years to tackle land degradation and climate change.

  • Targeted Growth: In 2024 alone, approximately 1.7 million trees were planted, with plans to double this annual target through state-managed nurseries.

  • Nationwide Afforestation: Reforestation efforts also include federal-level initiatives for national watershed protection and the establishment of medicinal plant herbaria.

2. Urban Greening & Beautification

Projects in this category focus on making major cities “saver, healthier, and greener” through intentional landscaping.

  • Strategic Urban Planning: Interventions include urban greening plans that prioritize walkability, pedestrian-oriented spaces, and the creation of “pocket parks” to improve local quality of life.

  • Ondo State Interventions: In Ondo, the government and ZL Global Alliance have integrated greening into broader sanitation mandates, ensuring that urban centers are clean and environmentally friendly for residents and investors.

  • Environmental Enhancement: Projects include the construction of road embankments and stabilization works to protect bridges and prevent erosion in communities across Imo and Kaduna.

3. Environmental Enhancement & Ecosystem Restoration

These efforts combine biological solutions with physical infrastructure to protect vulnerable areas from environmental threats.

  • Ecosystem Rehabilitation: Coastal and riverine restoration projects target degraded lands to restore their natural water-holding capacity, which helps mitigate the effects of droughts and seasonal flooding.

  • Erosion and Flood Control: Specific works have been documented in Imo State (Imo West Senatorial District) and Ondo State (Akoko North-East/West) to protect infrastructure from gully erosion through both structural drains and landscaping.

  • Phyto-Control: Some initiatives utilize “phyto-control” methods, using specific plant species to protect marginal lands and prevent further erosion.
